In a world of digital printing, hand printing has become both different and special. Putting a Black and White or colour negative into an enlarger and “making” a print by hand gives a crafted and individual feel. Our printers will apply their skill and interpretation to make the best prints from your negatives - prints are individually enlarged, dodged and shaded for the best results. Our prices also include spotting.
Black and White prints from negatives are available on either resin-coated paper or silver gelatin (fibre) paper.
Resin coated prints are on either matt or gloss paper. Print sizes up to 9x4 ft. We also offer an Art Service for one to one direction with a dark room technician. For this, print sizes are up to 60x40". Resin coated prints sold as art should be Selenium toned as resin prints can be vulnerable to deterioration in some environments over time and Selenium toning improves stability and longevity. Prices plus 100%
A Black and White silver gelatin print has a unique richness and depth that is hard to emulate with digital media and for tone, quality of finish and longevity, the fibre print is unsurpassed. As a result, fibre prints command a premium price with collectors. Print sizes up to 8x4 ft.
Prints made directly from colour negatives are also called C-types. Hand printed C-types are often preferred by fashion photographers for the rich and flattering skin tones. Samples are required for colour matching. We offer an Art Service (one to one direction with a dark room technician) for C-types too.
We are able to print directly from colour negatives up to 3000mm x 1780mm on C-Type and Duratran paper, possibly the largest in the world.
To create prints with borders, it may be necesssary to create a mask (unless the border size required is less than 2 inches and the print is 30x20" or smaller). Masks need to be ordered in advance and costs vary with size - please ask for details and prices.
For digital users, we can produce negatives from your files to enable you to use this service (see Transparencies, under Digital Printing).
